Used Golf Balls

A recent sales trend has shown that used golf balls are becoming an increasingly popular choice with golf players as they are helping to keep the actual playing costs low by offering cost savings of up to 85%. When you consider that an average box of golf balls costs around $22, combined with how often and frequently balls tend to get lost, it is clear to see how the savings can quickly add up.

The second, and by no means less important reason for the growth in used golf ball popularity, is the advantage by helping the global environment. By making a decision to purchase used golf balls you are using a true form of recycling, which in turn helps to save energy by a direct result in the slow down of the manufacturing process. A spokesman for Second Chance, the largest global ball-retrieval outfit, was recently quoted as saying that “100 million golf balls are recycled from hazards each year. The best and the brightest “experienced” golf balls are re-sold from bins at golf shops or repackaged to mass merchants. The rest are beaten into submission at some of the nation’s 2,300 driving ranges.” With the loss figures as high as this and great price savings to be made it is clear to see that the used golf ball really does deserve its place in today’s golfing world.

Vendors use a grading system to determine the quality of the balls that they offer for sale, and the following guide should help keep you on the right track to find your ideal used golf ball.

Used Golf Ball Grading

Today used golf balls are graded according to the usage and condition of the golf ball itself and there are generally 4 grading scales as follows-

AAAA Grade (or Mint)
Used golf balls of this grade have both the appearance and feel of a brand new ball). They should be very close, if not in perfect playing condition.

AAA Grade (or Grade 1)
Used golf balls under this grade should be lightly used, often narrowly missing out on the mint grade. AAA grade balls may have minor surface discoloration and possibly ink marks. The condition of these used golf balls should not affect the trajectory, flight path, or distance of the ball.

AA Grade (or Grade 2)
Used AA grade golf balls are generally in very good playable condition but could be sold with scuffs and may carry a heavier discoloration. Some companies will offer them with cuts or creases and they may be some practice balls found in the collection.

There is one last category of used golf ball that you may find, and these are called premium used golf balls (or range golf balls) and they are generally targeted at players who like driving the golf ball out of range.

Used golf ball Summary

The manufacturing standard of golf balls has never been so good, which in turn is helping to improve the longevity of the modern golf ball. With Today’s economic climate combined with the world’s global climate, recycling and purchasing used golf balls should be on almost every golf player’s agenda.
